TIGERBRANDS TO SET UP WINTER KITCHENS TO WARM HUNGRY BELLIES OF THE POOR
With winter having made its presence known around the country it is sad that an overwhelming number of South Africans languishing in poverty will go to sleep without a decent meal.
Because of this dire need for nutritious meals over winter, annually, Unite Against Hunger (UAH) sets up winter warmer kitchens aimed at fighting hunger and feeding hope to needy South Africans over the coldest week of June.
From the 18th to 21st of June 2008, UAH will set up a winter warmer kitchen at Emmanuels Haven, outside Motherwell in Port Elizabeth, Nivarna Hall in Polokwaneand Newtown Park in Johannesburg serving at least 4000 meals daily. The first winter warmer kitchen was set up two years ago, when UAH noticed the need for nutritious meals for the homeless, needy, and aged.
UAH an initiative of Tiger Brands is a not-for-profit, charitable organization which provides food to over 100 000 South Africans a month. Jimmy Manyi says this is an especially important campaign as the nutritional state of the population becomes worrisome. Having food and staying warm can be a matter of life and death to those languishing in abject poverty. As a country we need to work together to assist vulnerable people, says Manyi.
UAH is dependent upon a variety of sources for funding, including an annually CSI contribution of 1% of post tax profits from Tiger Brands. Beneficiaries include the African Children's Feeding Scheme (ACFS), Heartbeat and St Clement Home Based Care to name but a few. Through these mentioned NGO's, UAH feeds over 100 000 South Africans a month. Adequate nutrition has resulted in a marked improvement in the children growth and development as well as a noticeable improvement in their performance at school. UAH is continually extending its network of impact and several other projects are currently being introduced.
